With vintage late-70s OP-Amp Big Muffs selling for high prices, Mike Matthews aimed to make this classic pedal more accessible with the reissue of the EHX Op-Amp Big Muff Pi, also referred to as the IC or V4 Big Muff. Its circuitry was accurately re-created, and its features improved with the addition of a compact die-cast chassis and true bypass switching.
Billy Corgan's utilization of the OP-AMP Big Muff on the Smashing Pumpkins' classic 1993 album Siamese Dream popularized the pedal. Upon being filmed playing and discussing the reissue, Billy declared: “The magic is still within, I can still find what I'm looking for!” – Mike Matthews
The OP AMP BIG MUFF Distortion/Sustainer draws on op-amps and three gain stages for its distinct sound. Kit Rae, renowned Big Muff collector and historian, says it produces "a massive Big Muff sound with more crunch," ideal for grungy distortion, rhythm parts, and leads.
